From Passau to the Alps: My Favorite Day Trip on a Christmas Market Cruise

Untitled design (47)

I am so glad you’re here as we continue our journey through the iconic Christmas markets. After waking up in the beautiful port of Passau—which is just breathtaking with its Gothic and Italian Baroque architecture—I had a wonderful day exploring that I simply have to tell you about.

When you’re planning and booking a river cruise with AmaWaterways, one of the things I love most is the variety of excursions. In Passau, you can choose to stay local for the markets, hop on a guided bike tour, or do what I did: take a full-day trip style excursion to the stunning city of Salzburg, Austria.

A Scenic Journey to Salzburg

Because Salzburg is just across the border, do remember to bring your passport along! The bus ride is about ninety minutes, but please, try to stay awake for it. The views of the rolling hills and the approaching Swiss Alps are so beautiful that the time just flies by.

Once we arrived, we started our walking tour of the Old Town, which is a proud UNESCO World Heritage site. There is quite a bit of walking involved to see the best spots, so I highly recommend wearing your most comfortable, sturdy walking shoes.

Stepping Into History

Salzburg is often called the “Rome of the North” because of its incredible Italian-inspired architecture. As we walked through the narrow, cobblestone streets of the Altstadt (Old Town), it felt as though we had stepped back into the 17th century. We learned so much about the layers of history that make this city so special:

  • The Power of the Prince-Archbishops: For centuries, Salzburg wasn’t actually part of Austria; it was an independent city-state ruled by “Prince-Archbishops.” These men held both religious and political power, and they grew incredibly wealthy from the local “white gold”—the salt mines. In fact, the name Salzburg literally translates to “Salt Castle.” They used that wealth to hire the finest Italian architects to build the grand squares and fountains we see today.
  • Mozart’s Heritage: You can’t speak of Salzburg without mentioning its most famous son. We walked right past No. 9 Getreidegasse, the bright yellow house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756. It’s a bit surreal to stand there and imagine a young musical prodigy composing his very first pieces in those upstairs rooms. The street itself is famous for its intricate wrought-iron guild signs, which were originally designed to help people who couldn’t read find the right shops.
  • The Cathedral (Salzburger Dom): The Salzburg Cathedral is a Baroque masterpiece that truly anchors the city. With its massive turquoise dome and twin spires reaching toward the sky, it was the first truly Italian-style church built north of the Alps. It holds so much personal history for the locals too—it is the very place where Mozart was baptized, and the bronze font used for his ceremony is still there today.
  • The Fortress Lookout: High above the city sits the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Built in 1077, it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe and was never once conquered by enemy forces. It stands as a silent guardian over the Christmas markets, providing a stunning backdrop while you sip your warm cider.

Exploring these sites really helps you appreciate the deep roots of Austrian culture before you head off to enjoy the festivities.

Sweet Treats at the Christmas Market

2027 Iconic Christmas Markets Cruise

The Christmas markets in Salzburg are nestled right against the backdrop of the Alps and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. While you’re wandering through the stalls, you must look for the white cookies—they are often called Springerle or Vanillekipferl.

They are delicate, snowy-white, and absolutely delicious. I’ll admit, I ate two on the spot and still bought a few pieces to bring home to my husband!

A Musical Farewell

We headed back to the ship just in time for a wonderful dinner, but the evening didn’t end there. AmaWaterways arranged for opera singers to perform in the lounge. We all gathered with our drinks, sharing stories about our day while being serenaded by such talented performers. It was the perfect way to wind down.

Why the Food on Amadeus is Truly Heavenly

I finally discovered why everyone is buzzing about Amadeus recently. The real magic happens right in the local kitchen on board. We need a little sit-down about why this food tastes so special. Many travelers often overlook this boutique line for the larger corporate names.
